Antidepressants are a bandaid solution. Those emotions and issues you didn’t deal with or reflect on because you were medicated will come rushing to the surface the second you stop taking them, and it wont feel good. Life is about knowing yourself and overcoming obstacles. It breaks my heart seeing so many people on this stuff, especially kids. People have no idea how powerful they are.
Is the “chemical imbalance” theory true?
The chemical imbalance theory as a cause for anxiety and depressive disorders is NOT true. In fact, there is NO independent research to support this theory. NONE!
Over the last five years, research has found that there are many problems with the chemical imbalance theory as a cause for anxiety and depressive disorders.
Furthermore, independent investigations have found there are was never any “real” evidence to support the chemical imbalance theory, even at the outset. — anxietycentre.com

Uh, EXCUSE you, may I see your credentials and the study you performed concluding people don’t really need anti-depressants? Or are you just an armchair psychologist pulling this unsubstantiated and extremely uneducated opinion directly out your ass?

Alright. I’d like to think OP went into this with good intentions, but unfortunately ended up botching the message in the process. Because I did a bit of research, and they’re right: the chemical imbalance theory is largely unsubstantiated. Almost every scientific website I based indicated as such. The cause of depression remains largely unknown.

Medication can be very effective in severe cases, but it is NOT intended as a cure or a “band-aid solution”. It is intended as part of the treatment. They are meant to help stabilize a person’s mood so that they may more effectively confront any issues they might have. Taking meds on their own simply is not enough. While OP is right and it is possible to make due without them with alternative methods, it is also voluntary to take medication and is the business of the person taking them alone.

So, while you meant well, OP, I’m sorry but you just went ahead and substantiated another far more insidious misconception about depression: that people who have it should just “know themselves” and “overcome it”. Many people with depression are told that they need to just get over their sadness, and I’m sorry, but that’s far more damaging than offering something to them that could help them manage some of the symptoms.
